“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.’ I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.”
-Carl Rogers
Welcome! I am glad you are here and I’m eager to share more about my background, training, and therapy style. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, and I hold a Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C). I meet clients where they are and work to establish trust and safety, recognizing that these are built and earned over time. I bring humanity and humility to the therapeutic relationship, which involves being fully present and authentic, viewing clients as whole people (not symptoms or disorders), honoring the client as expert of self, embracing not knowing, acknowledging and repairing rupture, and exploring culture with care and curiosity.
I have over a decade of experience in the mental health field. I have worked in various levels of care, including psychiatric inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient settings. I have experience with anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, grief and loss, trauma, eating disorders, addiction/substance use disorders, relationship challenges and more. I am certified in the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. I also completed the 3-year training through Somatic Experiencing® International and am an Assistant for their trainings. I have training in Inner Relationship Focusing, a somatically-informed parts work modality. Additionally, I am approved to provide licensure supervision for Residents in Counseling.
Most importantly, I have found that a crucial aspect of therapy is the relationship. Research shows that the relationship between therapist and client tends to play a bigger role in positive outcomes than the modality or interventions utilized by the therapist. Of course, using evidenced-based treatment is important, and we all want to feel like we are getting something out of the time (and money) we spend in therapy. AND we know that so much wounding happens in relationship, so healing must happen in relationship- a relationship built on trust, safety, attunement, curiosity, and unconditional positive regard. This is what I will offer you!
My style is focused on warmth, curiosity, and simply being present with you in your process. I tend to be gentle and am quick to point out opportunities for practicing self-compassion. I often use humor and sarcasm; friends and clients alike would describe me as laid-back but serious when necessary. My practice is attachment-focused and somatic-oriented. This might look like exploring relationships with others and most importantly your relationship with yourself, and we will invite the body along. I do not offer Somatic Experiencing® as a stand-alone service; however, I tend to incorporate SE into almost every session, even if that is just by encouraging noticing. In my free time, I enjoy trying to read too many books at once, taking my dog on a long walk, planning my next trip, singing, grabbing an iced coffee, and laughing loud with my loved ones.
